Wireless FAQs
Learn more about your IT IN A BOX® from these Questions and Answers. Wireless Questions Wireless
What is an SSID? A. SSID stands for Service Set Identifier and it specifies the name of the wireless network your wireless computers are connecting to and allows them to communicate to the Access Point(s) for that network. The SSID must be a unique name on the network that is no more than 32 alphanumeric characters in length. Q. What is the effective range of the RF signal from the Access Point in my IT-100? A. Under ideal conditions in an open space, radio wave transmission will travel up to 300 feet. Radio Frequency (RF) transmission is subject to a variety of environmental conditions including walls, poles, filing cabinets or other metal structures that can block, reflect, or refract the RF signal. Also, RF data transmission slows the further the distance from the source so that wireless computers closer to the IT-100 will receive data faster than wireless computers further from the source. Q. What kind of encryption does the IT-100 use in wireless communication? A. The IT-100 uses Wired Equivalent Privacy or WEP. WEP is an encryption standard that can be configured to use either 64 bit or 128 bit encryption for IEEE 802.11b Access Points used by the IT-100. WEP allows you to create a set of respective "Keys" for each wireless network user based on a "Key String" passed through the WEP encryption algorithm. Access is denied by anyone who does not have an assigned key. Q. What types of wireless network interface cards and equipment are supported by the IT-100? A. The IT-100 support equipment certified as Wi-Fi compatible and compatible with the IEEE 802.11b standard. This includes but is not limited to equipment made by Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, and Siemens. Please contact your IT-100 vendor support for a complete list of supported equipment. |
