Q. How can I receive alerts from the IT-100 using SNMP?

A. You will need to install SNMP client software on the computer you want to use to receive the alerts. There are many commercial and some freeware products available, however they differ widely in how they are configured and what features they offer. Once properly set up, you can receive e-mail alerts on significant changes to the IT-100 as well as regular status reports. SNMP is typically used by large organizations such as ISPs that need to monitor a great many devices from one remote location. It is not often used by small business or home users.

Q. What is an SNMP trap?

A. An SNMP trap is a message sent by the SNMP server on the IT-100 to a computer specified to receive traps. The computer must also have software installed to interpret the messages. Traps are pre-configured alerts that are sent when some condition on the IT-100 exceeds a particular threshold. For example, you could set a trap to notify you if memory usage on the device exceeds 80%.

Q. Why is there an option to download MIB files on the SNMP Global Settings page?

A.MIB or Management Information Base files are a series of text files containing information that describes what objects on your network can be monitored and managed by SNMP. If you intend to use an SNMP client on a particular computer to monitor the IT-100, you will need to download the MIB files onto that computer. Once downloaded, you will have to then upload them to the SNMP client software. Without these files, you will not be able to monitor the IT-100 using SNMP.
