TCP TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol and is a protocol that permits two computers to negotiate a connection and exchange data over a network including the Internet. TCP is one of a suite of protocols or set of rules in the OSI Model. This protocol adds encoding to any network information you intend to send that guarantees the delivery of your data. If part of the information you are sending is not received, TCP provides a process to resend just the missing part of the message. After the TCP information is added to your message, it is sent to the IP protocol to be placed in virtual containers referred to as packets and prepared for transmission. See IP and OSI Model in this Glossary for more information.
