Server A server describes both specialized computer hardware and Operating System software. A server provides one or more specific services to a computer network such as DHCP, DNS, or File Sharing services. While a server Operating System does not necessarily have to be installed on specialized hardware, because the server will most likely be accessed by hundreds or even thousands of people (or more), the server hardware will have to be robust enough to manage the load. Also, servers often require additional hardware features for storage redundancy to protect important data stored on the device. The IT-100 offers multiple server features including DHCP, DNS, Email, File Sharing, and Proxy servers among others. See the terms DNS, DHCP, File Sharing, and Proxy in this glossary for more information.
