NTFS

NTFS stands for New Technology File System and is the file system used on Windows NT, 2000, 2003 and XP computer systems. NTFS incorporates numerous improvements over the Windows FAT file system used on Windows 98 and older operating systems. NTFS includes features for security, Access Control Lists and journaling. Journaling is a process where the file system writes any changes made to a journaling log first and then implements them in the file system. This helps preserve changes in the event of a power failure or other problem. Computers using FAT16 or FAT32 cannot natively read NTFS file systems. See the terms FAT32, Extended File Systems, and Access Control List in this glossary for more information.
