Network Address

A Network Address is the specific IP Address of the entire network or subnet you are using. For example, the LAN port on the IT-100 has a network address of 10.9.8.0. This address cannot actually be assigned to any individual device including the IT-100 however it identifies the network assigned to the LAN port. It is analogous to identifying a block number on a street. You may live on the 2500 block of Oak Street but your actual address may be 2505 Oak Street. By the same token, the IT-100's LAN port is set to have a network address of 10.9.8.0 but the actual address of the port is 10.9.8.7. The usable addresses for this network are from 10.9.8.1 to 10.9.8.254. For more information see Broadcast Address, IP Address, Network Interface, and Subnet Mask in this Glossary.
