Mac OS X

Mac OS X is the latest version of Apple's Macintosh operating system. While Mac OS is based on UNIX just as Linux is, the two systems have significantly diverged. One of the significant differences between Mac OS X and other operating systems such as Windows or Linux is that it is designed to run only on Apple's proprietary hardware platform. Windows and Linux both commonly run on PC hardware produced by a number of different companies. See the terms Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Operating System in this glossary for more details.
