IMAP

IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol and is a method for delivering email to an email client from a mail server. IMAP is more sophisticated than POP3 and is also used to access and manipulate email messages on a mail server such as the IT-100 without actually downloading them. IMAP also allows email users to create and modify email folders on the server. You can also delete email messages from the server without having to download them to your email client. Common email clients are Outlook, Outlook Express, and Eudora. Typically you should not have to change the configuration of a user's email client so you will only rarely need to be aware of the role of IMAP on your network. Some EmergeCore documentation may reference this protocol when describing how mail services work on the IT-100. See SMTP and POP3 in the Glossary for further information. Also see the Email sections of the FAQs and HOW TOs for additional details.
