File Sharing

File Sharing is the process of selecting specific files and folders on a computer and allowing them to be accessed by other people from their computers on the network. This allows you to share information stored on one computer with others for the purpose of project collaboration, training, and other objectives. Files can be shared on an individual PC or on a server device. Files can also be shared in a workgroup network or a domain. In a workgroup, if you have files you want to access on a different computer or server, you must first log onto your personal computer and then access and logon to the other machine. This can involve multiple logons when your resources are located on several different computers.  In a domain, you only have to logon to the domain once from your personal machine in order to gain access to shared files. The public folder on the IT-100 is shared to all users on the network but you can also create a Custom Share. When you create a Custom Share, you can specify who has access to that shared folder. That way, you can allow only specific individuals or groups to open the folder and deny access to everyone else on your network. You can also configure the Custom Share to either let people create and modify files or to have files be Read Only. Additionally, each authorized user on the IT-100 automatically has a home folder or home directory, but only that user can access their home folder. The manager user on the IT-100 has access to all folders including home folders by default.
