Broadcast Address

A Broadcast Address is a special IP address in a network or subnet that allows a message to be sent to all networked machines on that subnet at the same time. For example, a computer on the network will broadcast it's MAC Address to all the other computers on the network using a particular type of protocol when it is first powered up in order to request an IP Address. On the IT-100's LAN port, the Broadcast Address is 10.9.8.255. The Network Address is 10.9.8.0. This leaves the address range of 10.9.8.1 to 10.9.8.254 available to be assigned to network devices on the subnet. The Broadcast Address cannot be assigned to any device.
