How To Connect to the IT-100 using FTP from Linux

Although most of the documentation regarding the functions and services on the IT-100 is oriented to computers running a Windows operating system, the IT-100 supports connections from other operating systems including Linux. Linux desktop users can connect to and access file shares on the IT-100 using FTP over the LAN connection. This is done in a different way on a Linux computer than on a Windows PC but the steps are just as easy. This example uses the Debian Linux distribution. Here's how you get started:

  1. Sitting at a Debian Linux computer, double-click the Computer icon on the desktop.

  • The Computer dialog opens.

  1. Double-click the Network icon.

  • The Network dialog opens.

  • NOTE: Most likely you will see an icon labeled Windows Network.

  1. Click on File in the toolbar.

  2. Click on Connect to Server in the menu that appears.

  • The Connect to Server dialog appears.

  1. Click the Service Type drop down menu arrow.

  2. Select FTP (with login)

  • NOTE: You could select Public FTP but this would only allow you access to the public folder on the IT-100.

  1. In the Server field, type the IP address of the LAN port of the IT-100 such at 10.9.8.7.

  • NOTE: Because this is Linux, you must not use two backslashes such as \\10.9.8.7 in the Server field. If you use backslashes you will receive an error message when you try to connect.

  1. Click Connect.

  • A login box appears.

  1. Type in the username of a user on the IT-100 that has file sharing rights in the Username field.

  2. Type in the password of this user in the Password field.

  3. Click OK.

  • The Shares box opens displaying all of the shares available on the IT-100.

  • NOTE: Depending on the rights of the user who has logged on, when you click on a particular share or a document in a share, you may see another authentication box asking you to login with the credentials of a user who has the right to read that document.

  1. When you are finished, close all of the dialogs that were opened as you browsed the file shares.

  • A folder will be displayed on the Debian desktop showing the IP address to the IT-100.

  1. Right-click the folder and select Unmount Volume in the menu that appears.

  • The connection will close.
