How To Configure DHCP with IP Addresses for DNS and WINS Servers

Part of the information the DHCP server on the IT-100 can automatically assign to workstation computers on your Local Area Network or Wireless network is the IP addresses of the Primary and Secondary DNS servers and the Primary and Secondary WINS servers

A Domain Name Service or DNS server resolves a domain name to an IP address. In other words, when someone at a workstation on your network opens a web browser and attempts to reach a domain such as www.emergecore.com, the workstation requests the assigned DNS server resolve the domain name www.emergecore.com to the IP address of the domain (such as 65.37.119.193) so the two computers can connect and exchange information. If the workstation does not have the IP address of at least one DNS server, it cannot connect to any site or service by its domain name

A Windows Internet Naming Service or WINS server resolves a NetBIOS name to an IP address on a Windows network. Older Windows operating systems such as Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT use NetBIOS names as host names and require a WINS server in order to other access other computers and services on the network. Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems only use DNS for name to address resolution

The IT-100 provides both DNS and WINS services and it is recommended that you make the IT-100 your Primary DNS and WINS server. However, you can have separate servers providing DNS and/or WINS on your network and you can configure the IT-100 to automatically assign the addresses of those servers to any workstation computer on your LAN or Wireless Network. To configure the DNS and WINS server IP addresses you want DHCP to assign to computers on your network:

  1. Go to CoreVista Web

  2. Click DHCP in the left-hand sidebar menu

  3. Click the Global Settings file under the DHCP folder in the menu

  • The Global Settings page appears

  • Note: you will notice several fields you can configure including Domain, Max Lease Time, Primary and Secondary DNS and Primary and Secondary WINS

  1. Type the IP address of the Primary DNS server on your network in the Primary DNS field. By default, it is the IP address of the IT-100's LAN interface

  2. Type the IP address of the Secondary DNS server on your network in the Secondary DNS field. By default, it is the IP address of the IT-100's Wireless interface

  3. Type the IP address of the Primary WINS server on your network in the Primary WINS field. By default it is the IP address of the IT-100's LAN interface

  4. Type the IP address of the Secondary WINS server on your network in the Secondary WINS field. By default it is the IP address of the IT-100's Wireless interface

  • Note: you can change the Domain name and Max Lease Time in the Global DHCP Values box, although it is not recommended. The Max Lease Time is the amount of time a particular workstation computer is automatically assigned a specific IP address by the IT-100. You rarely have to adjust this setting since IP address leases are automatically renewed before the lease has expired so workstation computers continuously have dynamic IP addresses assigned.

  1. Click EDIT

  • The page will refresh and red text will appear above the Global DHCP Values box stating that Global DHCP Values saved

  • Note: You can quickly enable or disable DHCP services on this page by clicking either the Enabled or Disable links directly above the Global DHCP Values box
